NATIONAL INITIATIVE ON SNAKEBITE ENVENOMATION:
STRENGTHENING INDIA'S MEDICAL RESPONSE

National Initiative on Snakebite Envenomation: Strengthening India's Medical Response
Snake bite management Certification (SBMC)

Snakebite envenomation continues to be one of the most neglected yet critical public health challenges in India, contributing significantly to the country's preventable mortality and long-term morbidity—especially in rural and underserved regions. This national training initiative, developed in partnership with the Government of India, aims to equip healthcare professionals across the country with the skills, knowledge, and tools required to effectively combat the burden of snakebite envenomation. The course offers a deep dive into the epidemiology of snakebite in India, exploring high-risk populations, ecological and geographic influences, and the systemic gaps that lead to delayed or inadequate care.
It also provides scientific grounding through modules covering the molecular, biochemical, and immunological characteristics of venom and their clinical implications. Designed for frontline clinicians, emergency responders, community health workers, and public health officials, the program integrates expert-led lectures, interactive case-based discussions, and practical modules. Real-world insights and experience-sharing from leading toxicologists and emergency care specialists will further enhance the learning process. By the end of this training, participants will be better prepared to diagnose, manage, and respond to snakebite cases—contributing meaningfully to India's national efforts in reducing snakebite-related deaths and disabilities.
This nationally driven training initiative aims to equip participants with a comprehensive understanding and practical skills to improve snakebite diagnosis and management in India. By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

Understand and distinguish between venomous and non-venomous snakes commonly found across India.

Recognize the various clinical effects of different types of snake venom and differentiate their presentations in patients.

Learn and demonstrate evidence-based pre-hospital first aid measures to be administered immediately after a snakebite.

Develop competency in administering antivenom, managing snakebite complications, and addressing potential adverse drug reactions effectively.

Gain insights into the production, selection, storage, and rational use of antivenoms.

Appropriately select and administer antibiotics and supportive care for snakebite victims.
